The fruit has long protrusions with sharp grapple like hooks and is used to treat fevers, arthritis and digestive issues. Topically, a paste or extract, is used to treat pain and inflammation.

Marula
The marula fruit tree is native to parts of southern Africa. The trees grow wild and were once rare, but are now cultivated. Once considered sacred, the marula tree was linked to fertility and happy marriage in ancient times. Each marula fruit contains a hard, brown nut with pliable, white kernels at its core. Marula oil is primarily extracted from these kernels, but can also be obtained from the nut’s outer husk. Marula oil is rich in protein and easily absorbed, making it an effective skin and hair treatment.

Rosehip
One lesser known part of the rose is the round, seed-filled bulbs known as rose hips, which are found underneath rose petals. Also called the fruit of the rose, rose hips are usually red-orange, though yellow and black varieties can also be found. Unlike rose blossoms, which bloom in the spring and summer months, rose hips generally grow after the petals have bloomed and started falling off, which is usually in early to mid-fall. In fact, they’re considered sweeter when picked after the first frost of the season. Rich in nutrients and disease-fighting properties, rose hips have gained attention for their role in health and beauty.

Honeybush
The honeybush plant probably owes its name to the yellow, honey-scented flowers that cover the bushes during spring. Long ago, some communities use to include the flowers when they processed tea and called it “blommetjiestee” (flower tea). Today we know that the flowers are not required for the characteristic sweet aroma and flavour of the tea and that the tea can be harvested before flowering.

Rooibos
People have been talking and writing about the health benefits of Rooibos since the late 1960’s. This widespread anecdotal evidence and the presence of a blend of antioxidants in the product, whet the research appetites of several scientists in South Africa and around the world. They are testing and analysing Rooibos intensively to evaluate the potential health properties and to study the complex mix of active ingredients in Rooibos. The active ingredients in Rooibos are polyphenolic compounds. Polyphenols are characteristic chemical structures produced by plants.
